Create a desktop shortcut to remove USB devices.

Step 1

Right click on your desktop and choose New -> Shortcut.

Step 2

Type “ RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll ”, no quotes, for the location. After that, change the name of the shortcut.

Rename it to “Remove USB“ or whatever then select an icon for it.

Is this to open the ''safely remove hardware'' option?

Or even to use if the ''safely remove'' option has disappeared from the taskbar as often happens?

Yep Hazel, only opens safely remove hardware dialogue.

No big thing but you can make shortcuts to most run commands such as "ipconfig /flush dns" then give em a name and icon to suit.

I HATE that Safely Remove Hardware dialog. It always shows 3 obscure MS drivers or who knows what and no matter which one I click it appears nothing's happened.

So I fixed it by just ripping out the damn USB stick or external drive or camera or webcam or whatever I have plugged in. Safely remove, my butt. I'll give ya safe! Take THAT!!!
Actually, I never have any problem connecting or disconnecting stuff. I just ignore that dialog. Kid stuff.

I treat it with care Corona as I was once transfering poi's (points of interest) to a car sat nav and didn't wait to do the safely remove hardware bit.

It turned out windows hadn't quite finished transfering the info and I lost all it all.

So now I do it for all information transfers ....everytime.

My PC doesn't have any high tech responsibilities. So, I like to bang it up a bit.

No no, Kenny, no high tech stuff there I can assure you.

It's exactly the same routine as putting songs on an mp3 player.

My system is configured to be able to just remove them without having to click "safely remove hardware" however on one occasion recently I removed a USB thumb drive too quickly and was immediately warned about it, and the chkdsk scan found all sorts of corruptions. In short I had to format that USB thumb drive afterwards

I'll have to make a point of remembering my new identity.

On a side note, that StormPulse site you showed us has come in very handy. I'm taking a ferry today and wasn't sure with Kyle approaching, but now I see it'll pose no threat to my plans.
