Hi Canary

Thats a clean log but if you think there maybe some malware problems run Panda Active scan from Here.

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan
(Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When the download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location so you can post it back.

If its still taking along time to boot you could use Msconfig to disable some of the startup entries , Goto Start Menu > Run > Type msconfig and press OK > Goto the startup tab and disable anything you do not use often as you can re-enable them at a later stage if you need them to start with Windows, If you make changes on msconfig click Apply then OK.

Here is afew Startup items that can be disabled in msconfig, If you fix any of them In Hijack This you will need to keep the backups to be able to restore them (Hijack This Automatically Creates backups and the feature can be accessed from the main Hijack This menu):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

System Tray icon used to change display settings, change the clock rate and memory speed for nVidia based graphics cards. This is unnecessary since you can easily configure these settings the way you want them in the Display Properties and not have to mess with them again. NOTE that some people have noticed shut down delays when removing this Startup so best to remove it from msconfig rather than fix the entry as it can then be re-enabled if needed at a later stage.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /installquiet

nwiz.exe is a part of NVidia's Nview features installable alongside it's graphics hardware products. This application will give access to additional features which allow the configuration of up to 32 monitors on a host, or to expand the desktop across many monitors. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to your own preference.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDLauncher] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe"

Cyberlink PowerCinema video viewing software which allows you to play DVDs upon insertion. Non-essential process and is installed for ease of use

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_05\bin\jusched.exe

checks for updates to Java. You can either run it from Control Panel or visit Sun's website to keep Java up-to-date.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

QuickTime tray icon which doesnt need to start with Windows . Quicktimes movies will still automatically play when they are run. To stop it coming back right click the blue Quicktime Icon in the system tray then click Quicktime Preferences. Goto the Advanced tab and Uncheck the 'Install Quicktime Icon In System Tray' box then press Apply and OK and fix the above entry in Hijack This if it remains.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"

opens iTunes when you connect your iPod to your computer. It does have a habit of reinstalling itself however.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Application Scheduler installed along with Real Player. Once installed, it runs independently and doesnt need to start up automatically with Windows. To disable this after fixing so it doesnt return, goto Start Menu > All Programs > Real Player

Click Tools then Preferences. Goto The Automatic Services and uncheck all boxes.
Do the same for the AutoUpdate & Message Center tabs and press OK then exit

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

reader_sl.exe is a process associated the with the Adobe Reader. It is used to decrease the load time for the reader when a PDF document is selected. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to your own preference.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Application which launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. It's somewhat of a resource hog, and some users claim there's no difference with or without it. Note - if you make use of the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar outside an office program this application will need to be enabled for it to show.

Programs like Symantec can use alot of system resources so if its still slow after removing some of the start up items above there's not much you can do to improve things.

Hi.

I tried some of the things you mentined, but to no effect.

But then I asked for help with another problem I was having, this one with Windows Defender (http://forum.ccleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=4716&st=0&gopid=35546&), and fixing that problem also seemed to solve the more general slow start-up issue.

I don't know if it's of any interest to you, but I thought you might want to store it away for future refence - a troublesome Windows Defender seems to be able to cause more general start-up problems.

Hi Canary

Thanks for the info,

I had a similar problem when I installed Windows Defender on a machine with a clean SP2 install with no updates or hotfixes where it would show the definitions are out of date then show there is no updates available when you clicked the Update button, It was easy enough to solve on that pc by visiting Windows Updates and installing the basic components to use the updates site (Windows Installer 3.1 & KB898461) then it updated fine. It made it easier to find the cause of the problem by reading the WindowsUpdate.log file in the Windows folder.

Its good to see you solved the problem on your pc smile.gif
