Hi tripod

Can you run Disk Cleanup without it freezing the computer,

Goto Start Menu > Run > tpye

cleanmgr

Place a check next to temporary files and recycle bin then press OK,

Then try Ccleaner again

If it still doesnt work try running Ccleaner in safe mode just to check if it is the amount of running processes thats causing a problem

To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears and press Enter.

Run Cleaner when the desktop loads and then see if it can complete the clean up, if it can then reboot back to normal mode and try it again

let us know how it goes

Andy

Hi tripod smile.gif

The log looks fine, you appear to have two Anti-Virus programs with AVG and McAfee, although that sounds like twice the protection they can actually interfere with each other, use alot of system resources and generally make the system less secure. One AV is really enough for any PC and if there must be more than one the Real Time protection should be disabled on the second and only used as an "On Demand" scanner which you start manually and then close after its finished scanning.

EDIT: I noticed your also being helped by Bobbi Flekman Here, looking at that log it appears that you installed AVG between the 20-30th June so if the slowdown has started since then you may want to uninstall it from the system.

These are some optional fixes that can be made:

Run Hijack This and choose Do A System Scan then place a check next to any of these entries that you want to fix, close all open browser and other windows except for Hijack This and press the Fix Checked button

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
Application Scheduler installed along with Real Player. Once installed, it runs independently and doesnt need to start up automatically with Windows. To disable this after fixing the entry so it doesnt return, goto Start Menu > All Programs > Real Player > Click Tools then Preferences. Goto The Automatic Services and uncheck all boxes. Do the same for the AutoUpdate & Message Center tabs (On the Message Center click Configure Message Center and uncheck all boxes) and press OK then exit

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe
Checks for Java updates but doesnt need to start up with Windows. You can still update Java after fixing this entry by using the Control Panel's Java icon (Start Menu > Control Panel > Java) or by visiting Sun's website Here

Your version is a little bit out of date and it common for them to leave older versions when it upgrades so its easier to remove all the versions of Java Runtime Environment (J2SE) on the Add/Remove screen (Start Menu > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs) then upgrade to the latest version (5.0 Update 7) from Here

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
QuickTime tray icon which doesnt need to start with Windows, Quicktime movies will still play automatically when they are run. To stop it coming back right click the blue Quicktime Icon in the system tray then click Quicktime Preferences or access Quicktimes options on the Control Panel. Goto the Advanced tab and Uncheck the 'Install Quicktime Icon In System Tray' box then press Apply and OK and fix the above entry in Hijack This if it remains.

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML
This appears to be just a leftover entry but Viewpoint is classed as Foistware and a Potentially unwanted program as its sometimes installed without the users consent, you can read Here for more information and there maybe some indications that they will move into tracking users at some stage which you can read more about Here. If you value the service they provide then it can be left on the system but if not then it can be fixed with HijackThis and removed using the Add/Remove screen (Start Menu > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs) by removing any Viewpoint products listed.

If you think there might be some malware issues download Ewido and run a full scan

Download Ewido Anti-Spyware
  1. Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  2. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  3. Click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan
  4. Ewido will list any infections found on the left, when the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will then display "All actions have been applied" on the right.
  5. Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file which you can then save to the Desktop and post back
Post back the log if it detects and malware problems

Thanks

Andy
