Hey guys,

After reading about Hijack This on the boards, I figured it was a good program and I downloaded it. However, i'm not too sure what to do with all these files (i.e. i don't want to delete something i should have kept) unsure.gif .
I was wondering if anybody had some program/file/link that could help me determine what to do with these files...or if anybody ahd the time to help me.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.toshiba.ca is thought to be related to CoolWebSearch.

Maybe it is a good idea to download and run CoolWebShredder from www.intermute.com.

No. The user is located in Canada and is using a Toshiba laptop. That is the default homepage.

Thanks so much guys!
Great detailed replies...and so quick too! biggrin.gif

Ok, well I had already downloaded CWS shredder, and it ahd detected CWS on my computer. However, ive run it several times, and it appears my computer is clean of that virus. So, concerning the file R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.toshiba.ca I'm not sure I should delete it...what do you think?

Concerning MSN plus!, when I installed it, I never installed the sponsor...and when I run spybot/adware LOP doesnt come up anymore (although it did in the past)...should I still get rid of MSN Plus?
Or do you guys simply recommend scrapping MSNPlus?

Oh, and I wanted to know...I used RegSeeker and I deleted a bunch of files (i.e. like 500). However, I backed up all those files before deleting them. Is RegSeeker a trustworthy program? Or should I just use HiJack this and get your help?

Thanks so much guys. I wasn't really expecting a reply, and definitely not sevral detailed ones like I got!

have a nice day smile.gif

Ok, so owning a toshibo laptop and living in Canada, I guess I'll keep the R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.toshiba.ca file.

Thanks again,

Snowy
DjLizard
I was told that RegSeeker tends to find a lot of registry "errors" that should actually NOT be removed.
Snowy
Oh...well, it's a good thing I backed-up all those registry files!
I just added them back to the registry.
Guess I might as well delete that program...

thanks.

I forgot: I wanted to ask you two more questions:

1-I was wondering if anyone knew of a website that could show me how to configure appropriately my firewall (I run sygate). Because I know that having an unconfigured firewall is not that usefull...

In fact, I ran a2Hijackfree, and it appears I have a problem with WinHole...

2-In my task manager, I always have several (5 to be precise) SVCHOST.exe running. Is this normal?

Thanks again for all the help, smile.gif

This pretty much sums it up

QUOTE
"Svchost.exe" (Generic Host Process for Win32 Services) is an integral part of Windows OS. It cannot be stopped or restarted manually. It manages 32-bit DLLs and other services. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services portion of the registry to construct a list of services that it needs to load. In normal conditions multiple instances of Svchost.exe run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services, so that separate services can be run depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This allows for better control and debugging.

And as for Sygate, it comes down to personal prefrence

Press: Tools, then options and configure it how you like. If you dont understand or are unsure about something then post it here.

Then: tools, applications and allow or block certain programs from accessing the internet. Again, if you are unsure about something, then just post here.
Snowy
Thanks for the reply about svchost. Very appreciated.
Concerning Sygate configuration, I thought there might be something more than simply configuring the tools menu...but I guess not! However, I do have one question concerning the confirguration: What does enableing DLL authentification consist in? Should I? why?
Thanks again for the reply.

Anybody want to take a my hijackthis log (see just above)?

Have a nice day, smile.gif

Tarun should take a look at your log. He's good at that stuff.

About dll authentication, it basicly checks with you if a new dll can be loaded for the first time within a trusted application. Some say that it should be on all the time, but others find it a bit annoying. Personally I keep it off. I update things alot and it gets to be too much.

A lot of this may be a repeat of the previous post.

MessengerPlus comes bundled with some bad malware, they know it yet they continue to distribute it. Just get rid of it. You'd be better off.
Snowy
Thanks nod32 for the answer concerning DLL authentification. Considering I also update my programs all the time, I guess I will also be keeping it off...

Tarun, before I posted the previous hijack this log, I had unistalled MessengerPlus. I guess this means there are still some components remaining on my computer?
Thanks again for your help with the logs!

Yeah, it may just be traces. I did notice how it wasn't a full path.
DjLizard
I installed Messenger Plus myself to see what the hooplah was. It tells you, repeatedly, that it has a sponsor, and that you do not have to install it. If you choose not to install it, your system stays completely clean. I did it myself. Also, I read that if you DO install the sponsor (which I did NOT test, for obvious reasons), it's pretty easy to uninstall (then again, that's what I *read*).

Yeah, thing is though what you read and what it does can be two totally different things; right?
DjLizard
I suppose - but half of what I read was correct; I can only assume that the other half is correct by osmosis. It seems that it works fine for people if they simply use the sponsor's uninstaller, er, Messenger Plus' uninstaller.
Snowy
Just for that you know, when I installed MessengerPlus, I never accepted to install the sponsor. Even when I would update the program, I was very carefull of not installing the sponsor. So even without installing the sponsor, you get some stuff you never wanted...
Anyways...now I just have to try to eliminate the remaining traces of the program and this thing will be a thing of the past! biggrin.gif

Hey guys, me again!
I've been trying to clean this second computer of mine and I am experiencing sevral difficulties.
I ran all the programs contained in your malware package removal, as wel as a few more, both in normal mode as well as in safe mode. I rebooted my computer sevral times during the process to help the elimination of unwanted files.

However, my browser (well, when I use IE instead of FF, which is very rare...) is constantly being redirected. And the computer still doesnt run as fast as it used too.
One more thing, I ran Microsoft Antispyware (beta) and it removed sevral malware files...including the dreaded C2 lop.com . However, when in MS' antispyware/advanced tools/networking/windows hosts files I can find hundreds (seriously) of what appears to be ads sites/hosts.

Tarun, if you could please run this HJT log through your super program wink.gif , i would very much appreciate it. I hope this will solve this issue...I looked at the log, and I think sevral entries are malware...I didnt remove anythign however. I want you to take a look first! smile.gif

These two entries look particularly suspiscious to me...

Any idea what this is:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dashonline] C:\DOCUME~1\PROPRI~1\APPLIC~1\FASTKE~1\bone two aim.exe

Seems suspicious to me, unless you know what it is.

Same old recommendations. Quicktime Alternative, etc. biggrin.gif
DjLizard
That last thing's spyware, I saw that just today. There were several folders in %appdata% that needed to be deleted. Mostly they were in the All Users appdata, but apparently they can be elsewhere, or anywhere. Ad-Aware, Spybot, F-Prot, Stinger, and McAfee didn't notice it. It's pretty difficult to remove this stuff with only Hijack This!.
Snowy
Thanks for the super quick replys guys! biggrin.gif I must say I'm really impressed by the promptness of your answers!

Yep, I gotta flush quicktime and get the alternative indeed!

Yeah, O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dashonline] C:\DOCUME~1\PROPRI~1\APPLIC~1\FASTKE~1\bone two aim.exe ... dont know what that is. Noticed I had an entire folder with funny names containing that bonetwoaim.exe
DJ Lizard: You're right : that folder is contained in the All Users appdata. Any tips on how to remove it? Or do I simply delete the folder and all of it's contents?

Tarun: I reiterate my position that you should make your HijackThis converter public. It really is great. I've found a couple online, and they were honestly pathetic. Not even worth using. Nothing compared to your program... Once again, just my little 02 cents.

One more thing (yes, I have yet ANOTHER question for you guys unsure.gif ). What should I do concerning the hundreds of windows host files I found through MS Antispyware (MSantispyware/advanced tools/networking/windows)?

Thanks again,

Snowy

Hundreds? Literally hundreds? There should only be one host file to my knowledge.

Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS
You should have the following in the XP directory:
  • hosts
  • lmhosts.sam
  • networks
  • protocol
  • services
  • services.isc
